Not long after becoming a follower of Jesus in my early 30s, I began to ponder how I could use my vocational skills as a journalist in service to the Lord?

Over the years, God has presented many opportunities, including writing and editing for faith-based publications, authoring a fatherhood column in a secular publication and simply lending a hand to people who needed help with their writing.

In 2005, I enrolled in "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement," a class offered by the U.S. Center for World Mission. Among the many things that crystallized for me during that experience was a realization of how many newsletters from missionaries are poorly written, edited and designed. The implications hit me hard: Less prayer, less financial support, less fruit for the Kingdom of God; more frustrations for God-hearted, well-intentioned missionaries.

Over the next two years, I prayed about why this was and what could be done about it. My skills and those of others I know seemed a perfect fit for helping missionaries and other missions-minded organizations improve their communications.

After meeting with friends with much more experience than me in the world of missions, I found a partner in Steve Shadrach and theBodyBuilders (www.thebodybuilders.net). With their help, we launched WordBuilders as a free service, and it evolved into a for-profit company with a nonprofit component.
